Hiking in Patagonia - Chile and Argentina

Part Two - Argentina

Page Three - El Chalten

Crested caracara
Another Southern Crested Caracara (Carancho).
They often hang out near roads waiting for road kill. We saw this one on the way
from El Calafate to El Chalten.

Hideout
This average looking small hotel is famous for being a temporary hideout for Butch Cassidy and
the Sundance Kid. We stopped here for a rest break on the way to El Chalten. Some of our tour group,
not I, had the lemon cream pie recommended by our tour leader. The exterior looks much like it did 100
years ago, but the interior has been remodeled and includes a gift shop.

Poster
Wanted posted hanging on the wall inside the hotel.
Butch Cassidy was christened Robert Leroy Parker by
his Mormon pioneer parents. The Sundance Kid's real name
was Harry Longabaugh. The two and their gang, the Wild Bunch,
help up banks and robbed trains in the Rocky Mountains in the 1890s.
They fled to Argentina in 1901, along with Sundance's girl friend,
Etta Place. The 3 homesteaded a ranch for a while. By 1905, they
were back to robbing banks. The La Leona Hotel is where they hid
out for a short time after a bank robbery in Argentina before going to
Bolivia. Most historians believe that Butch and Sundance died in a
shootout in San Vincente, Bolivia, across Argentina's northern border.

Robert Redford and Paul Newman were much more handsome in the movie.

Fitz Roy
Our first view of Mt Fitz Roy from the ground, after having seen it from the airplane flying to Punta Arenas, Chile.
In Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, there are 2 famous peaks that people come to see. One is Fitz Roy;
the other is Mt Torre (Cerro Torre). Because of frequent clouds forming around them and rainy weather, it can be
difficult to see them. In this photo, Cerro Torre is to the left of Fitz Roy and is buried in the clouds.

Fitz Roy
Another view of Fitz Roy shortly after the above photo was taken, as clouds started to form over the peak.

3 condors
We saw numerous condors flying high in the sky above us as we were nearing the town of El Chalten.

Permanent customer of the restaurant in El Chalten where we had lunch.
We came back to this restaurant for dinner the next night, and he was
still there in the same position.

Eco camp
Fitzroy Eco Camp - our lodging near El Chalten located inside Los Glaciares N.P.
Our Argentinian guide Cecilia joined us in El Chalten. The lodging hostess is in the middle,
and our tour leader Sergio is on the right. They are standing in the reception building, where the
dining room and lounge areas are also located. The lodge has beautiful wood.

Cabin

The camp has 8 cabins and a tented camping area.

Inside the cabin
A view inside our modest cabin. Each cabin has 2 beds, a firewood stove, and private deck
set in a beech tree forest. There is a separate building housing showers and lavatories,
divided by gender.
