In this area, the Ladin language is often spoken.
We left Cortina and were transferred a short distance to the trailhead,
while our main luggage was taken to Corvara. We brought in our packs
only what we absolutely needed for an overnight at the Mountain
Inn Fanes at 6,760 feet, which was our destination for the day.

Fanes
We started hiking on a winding trail through wood below the mountain of
Col Rosa. We saw larch trees and evergreens.

Mountain Inn Fanes where we spent the night. It was originally built
in 1928 as a mountain ski hut by Max and Petra Mutschlechner,
and has continued ownership in the same family since then.
We had our own room with a faucet and basin. Communal showers
and bathrooms were down the hall from our room.

Fanes
There was an optional afternoon hike after lunch at the Inn.
Five of the group hiked with our guides up one of the hillsides
toward Paso San Antonio ridge. Here we are about to pass
another inn near ours.

Since it was nearing dinner time, most of the afternoon hikers
opted to stop at this point to relax and enjoy the 360 degree views.
Guide Rita took Jenny further up to a ridge behind us.

saw a number of shy marmots running around.

Just barely got a photo of these two before they scampered into their home.
